267: When You Know It But Don’t Do It (Then What?)

Do you listen to the podcast or read blogs & articles but struggle to translate the ideas and strategies into actions of your own?

Are you losing & gaining the same 5-20 lbs over and over?

Do you know what to eat and how to exercise but fail to consistently implement?

That was Marcelle’s story and she is sharing her success strategies as well as candidly discussing where she still struggles and what she can do about it.

She describes how she routinely got swept up by the chaos of life, failing to take care of herself. Most importantly, she shares how she was able to take a step back and create space between what’s happening around her and the choices she makes in response to the chaos.

She shares some powerful analogies describing how she’s overcome some of her biggest challenges. Don’t miss her story!

How I Made Myself Really Proud (And You Can, Too)

How I Made Myself Really Proud (And You Can, Too)

(If you’d rather listen to this blog post than read it, click here for the audio)

I am learning how to do things on my own. By myself. For myself.

It’s usually not easy.

For months now, I haven’t had an office space. I work on the couch.

I haven’t liked it but I haven’t changed it.

I complained about it but didn’t do anything about it. (I’ve taken that approach in other areas of life too…it’s not exactly effective. Anyways…)

Last weekend, I decided to stop being unhappy about it and do something about it.

I found a gorgeous, 7 foot solid wood dining table on clearance. Perfect.

They measured my car. Won’t fit.

I made other arrangements for help.

They fell through.

At this point, there were a number of big barriers.

  • It’s a huge, heavy table.
  • It won’t fit in my car.
  • I don’t have anyone to help.
  • I can’t move it alone.
  • It’s snowing.
  • The stairs in my place are steep and there’s a sharp 90 degree turn to navigate

Yup, all very real, true & valid barriers.

I decided to find a way, anyway.

What can I do?

I can fit the legs in my car. I can get to the two legs here.

Sure, they’re heavy, but I can do it.

I drove to the store and loaded up the legs.

img_1114

I carried them up the steep stairs by myself.

What else can I do? Instead of seeing everything that was a challenge, what else can I do?

I drove back to the store.

I asked the guy to help me find a way to fit the 7 foot, solid wood table top in my car.

He did.

We laid down the back seats, moved up the front seats and tied that bad boy down with the tailgate open.

img_1116-1

(we won’t get into how I talked to the table, encouraging it to not fly out of the back of the car on the drive home)

He asked how I’d get it out of the car on my own.

“I’ll figure it out”

One thing at a time.

I did. I got it out of the car by myself, in the snow, without killing myself or putting holes in the wall.

It was hard.

I cried.

I was frustrated and proud at the same time.

I got that damn 7 foot, solid wood table top up the stairs.

By myself.

The thing I thought I couldn’t do.

The thing everyone else thought I couldn’t do.

The thing I almost didn’t try to do.

The thing logic would tell me wasn’t possible.

I did it.

img_1119

(I had to pause at the top of the stairs to catch my breath and appreciate the miracle before taking the 90 degree turn)

It’s solid wood. It’s heavy.

Once I made it to the living room, I carefully slid the table onto the floor and hoisted the legs on top of it.

I screwed in the bolts, by hand, with the small wrench the furniture-store-man had given me. (You thought I had tools of my own? Um, no. I have scissors and knives.)

I couldn’t get the last one to go. It’s always the last one, isn’t it?!

I got pissed.

I took a few deep breaths, said a dozen or so curse words, unscrewed them all and started over.

I did it.

I hoisted the table on it’s side.

img_1120

img_1122

And then….

I realized it might be too large and heavy for me to get it upright on my own.

Damn it, no! I can’t get it this far and then get stuck on the LAST DANG STEP!

I’ll find a way.

I sat on the floor, took a few more deep breaths and decided to harness all my strength of mind and muscle.

I did it.

I turned it upright without putting holes in the floor or wall.

Without breaking any bones.

I did it.

This isn’t about a table.

This isn’t about being an independent woman, either.

This is about deciding that the only limits on you are the ones you accept.

Hear me:

You can do so much more than you think you can.

Guys, understand something:

Sometimes the barriers are REAL.

I’m not suggesting that you’re complaining.

But real barriers can be overcome when you decide to keep going anyway.

Start fighting for your highest potential.

You can do it.

What can you do today to make yourself proud?

Why You Stop Trying (The Progress Cycle)

Do you ever feel like you sabotage yourself?

You do the work, get some results and then….you stop.

The excuses, exceptions & justifications start to creep in and before you know it, those results you worked so hard for are no where to be seen.

It creates a ton of frustration.

“What’s wrong with me?

It feels so awesome when I’m making progress, why do I stop trying?

I keep getting in the way of my goals!

Why do I keep doing this?”

There’s actually nothing wrong with you.

There are two things you need to know:

  1. This is not only normal, but predictable
  2. If you change your strategy, you can break this cycle

There’s a predictable cycle of change that explains why we stop trying. Understanding it is the first step towards breaking out of it. Here’s what it often looks like:

You get frustrated. You feel bad about your body, habits, finances or life in general. It sucks. Things have to change. You’re motivated to do things differently.

Fueled by this discontent, you start to do the work. Your new behaviors are powered by a strong desire to escape the pain, frustration or other negative emotions.

You start to see results. You recognize progress. That frustration or pain is lessened and now you’re feeling encouraged, hopeful and inspired.

While that’s awesome, this is where things often go wrong. Yes, there’s less pain, less frustration and with that often comes a decreased sense of urgency to do the work.

You aren’t as unhappy so that negative emotion driving your change isn’t as strong.

Enter excuses, exceptions & justifications. You start to make those old choices again. You return to the way things were.

Eventually, you find yourself back at the start. Unhappy, frustrated and believing in yourself less than ever.

Tony Robbins explains that the desire to avoid pain and seek pleasure drives this cycle.

When we are in enough pain, we’ll take action to reduce it.

When the pain decreases, we seek pleasure, often in ways that create more pain.

Once we’ve created more pain again, by seeking pleasure, we have to do the work (over again) to alleviate the pain.

The fundamental issue here isn’t with this pleasure/pain cycle but with our perspective.

We have mis-classified the things that bring pleasure.

It’s not pleasurable to eat to the point of weight gain – that’s pain.

It’s not pleasurable to eat or drink to the point of guilt, frustration, shame or embarrassment.

The key to breaking out of this cycle lies in redefining both pleasure and pain.

I want to help you do this.

I’m hosting a totally free 2-part webinar series where I’ll talk you through exactly where we’re messing up this cycle and how we can break free from it.

267: When You Know It But Don’t Do It (Then What?)

266: Drama Free – Ending Food Guilt & Creating Freedom

What if you didn’t attach emotion to food?

What if your days weren’t “good” if you made good food choices and “bad” if you made bad food choices?

What if you never felt guilty about a food choice or skipped workout?

What would that mean?

Would it mean that you stop trying?

I really doubt it.

I think it means that you’ve found freedom. And, when you find freedom, food choices get so much easier and life gets better.

You are in control. Food isn’t in control.

That’s exactly what happened for Amanda and she’s sharing her story today.

While you’re here, don’t miss your chance to grab your spot for my TOTALLY FREE upcoming webinar series on losing weight for the last time!

Ending Food Guilt & Creating Freedom

Amanda had already lost 80 lbs but still wasn’t happy.

She had food guilt. Workout guilt. Ongoing shame & judgement that was completely exhausting.

However, she found freedom.

She removed all the emotional baggage she had attached to her food & fitness choices.

When she was able to do that, everything got easier: her food choices, her workout consistency, her role as a mom & a wife.

But she’s not totally in the clear. Now that she hasn’t hitched her happiness to the number on the tag in her jeans, she’s trying to define what she wants.

In today’s episode we talk about how Amanda found freedom, what it meant for her, and how she can figure out what she’s after now and how to get there.

{Recipe} Rich, Creamy, Filling Fat Loss Friendly Soup

{Recipe} Rich, Creamy, Filling Fat Loss Friendly Soup

The other night I made myself some soup and as I sat there eating it I thought, “this tastes almost exactly like a rich, creamy potato soup!” But, there was no potato in it.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE a good rich, creamy soup in the cold weather.

Unfortunately, most of the fat loss friendly soups are far from creamy and filling!

I hate having a bowl of soup and being hungry 7 seconds later.

This soup will not leave you with that problem! It filled me up all night long!

If you want a delish, easy soup that’s as comforting as it is fat loss friendly, you’ve got to give this one a try!

Faux-Potato Soup (Creamy Cauliflower Soup)

  • 1 carrot, peeled & diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1/4 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 bag frozen cauliflower (I used Trader Joe’s)
  • 1-2 cups bone broth (depending on how thick or thin you want the soup, start with 1 and adjust accordingly. Yes, you can use stock if you don’t have access to broth – PS – did you listen to yesterday’s podcast on bone broth? Don’t miss it!
  • Salt & pepper to taste

unnamed

In a skillet, melt butter.

Add garlic, onion, celery & carrot and saute until soft and slightly browned)

Meanwhile, add bone broth and cauliflower to a saucepan and cook over medium heat for 5-10 minutes

Combine cauliflower and veggies in a blender and blend until smooth.

Add more bone broth to blender if you want your soup thinner.

Add salt & pepper to taste

Now I know what you’re thinking…”How many people does it serve?”

I dunno.

I ate more than half of it for dinner.

But guys, I want you to think about it this way: it’s 100% relative.

I didn’t have anything else with it, which is way different than if you’re having it along side a steak and salad, ya know?

How much did you eat during the day?

What are your goals?

How hungry are you?

Are you satisfied after a half cup? Then stop!

Practice listening to your body and evaluating what you eat based on your whole day, not based on one single meal.

Hope you enjoy it!
