In today’s episode, I talk about our recent Ascend workshop in Portland, Oregon. This idea of ‘The Gap’ came up often. It’s one of the biggest takeaways I brought back with me, and it’s one of the most impactful takeaways those who attended experienced.

As I prepared for our annual Ascend weekend workshop, I felt a huge sense of responsibility…

Not just to ensure everyone who attends receives value, but that they leave with what they need to take ACTION. To not just listen and learn, but to then put these learnings to work.

To do.
To act.
To grow!

This was my biggest focus in the lead up to Ascend. Each year we run a private workshop that lasts a full weekend. This time we had it in Portland, Oregon. I had an amazing time and the feedback from everyone who attended matched this.

I was confident everyone would leave with a lot of value.
As we planned and structured the entire event, I knew we would deliver.

Yet there was that nagging worry that what we offered wouldn’t be enough. Because unless everyone who attended took action, what would it matter? It’s a huge issue in today’s fast-paced society where we have access to anything and everything.

There’s so much choice. It’s easy to learn and read books, listen to podcasts, watch videos and take courses. Learning isn’t the problem, but rather what you do with this that is.

Welcome To ‘The Gap’

Growth comes through action, not simply by learning. Learning on its own is never enough, and in fact, can make your problems that bit harder to overcome.

Learning makes you aware.
It helps you figure out what you want and where you want to go.

But reality is where you are today, and what you actually DO.

This is what I call The Gap.

The space between where you are now and where you want to be. The difference between knowing what you want and actually doing it (your current habits, behavior and actions).

Living in the gap is a dangerous place to live. I did it for a long time. For years, I struggled with my weight. I’d lose some, put it back on and never seem to maintain what I wanted. I kept learning: about a new diet, a new lifestyle, a workout routine, etc…

Each time I did I built a greater understanding as to what I wanted.
Yet my reality was that I didn’t consistently put in the work.

I had built a gap between who I was and who I wanted to be.

Have You Built a Gap For Yourself?

I explained The Gap during Ascend. I told everyone there that I didn’t want them to just learn, but to leave and take action on what they did; to not just create a plan, but then act on their plan each day.

It seemed to resonate. I had conversations with people who realized they had created a gap for themselves. It’s common. And it’s an issue that’s more common today because we have access to everyone and everything.

Go back a few decades and most people lived in blind bliss.

Whereas today you learn each day whether you consciously mean to or not. Each time you scroll through social media you see people living a different life to you.

So, you pull on a thread and one thing leads to another…

You learn. You become aware of something new.
You understand it and decide you want that too.

You decide to make changes:

  • To your money situation
  • To lead a healthier lifestyle
  • To lose weight and get fitter
  • To improve your mindset
  • To be more grateful, mindful and present…

You read books, listen to podcasts and watch videos. You know how to do it. You know what you need to do. But unless you actually DO it… nothing happens.

You create a gap.

And the more you read, watch and learn… the wider the gap gets.

The Dangers of Always Learning

First of all… the desire to improve yourself is a gift.

The fact you realize you want to grow is no bad thing. It’s great. The opportunity to learn and expand your mind is an opportunity you should not waste. Yet it’s important to know how dangerous learning can be.

Because each time you learn something but then don’t make changes, you feel worse about yourself.

Your self-esteem goes down and your shame goes up. As does frustration, guilt and a whole host of other negative emotions. So you learn more, read more books, take a few more courses because you want to “figure it out”.

Yet each time you do, you make the gap wider!

Unless you match your mental growth with action, you create a genuine, legitimate risk of making matters worse. It’s strange, but a lot the time when you come across someone who’s genuinely happy and content with their life, you’ll find that they don’t read books or listen to podcasts that often.

They don’t expand on what they know, so they don’t create a gap.
This allows them to be happy with where they are, whatever their situation may be.

Well, like I say… your desire to improve yourself is a gift.

But unless you match what you learn with action, you’ll create a gap that sets you back.

What is YOUR Gap?

What gap have you created for yourself?

  • What’s the gap between what you know and what you’re doing?
  • What’s the gap between how you wish you behaved consistently and how you are?
  • What’s the gap between how you would like to think and are actually thinking?
  • What’s the gap between how you would like to care for your health and what you’re doing?

You have a choice to close this gap or to make it larger. By continuing to learn but not putting what you do into action, you widen the gap. Yet as soon as you DO something, you take a step in the right direction.

Each day, you make the gap smaller.
Each day, you feel better about who you are and where you are.

This is your responsibility! It isn’t to just learn and raise awareness, it’s to match this growth with action. Once you do you improve your self-esteem and worth. You feel like you’re accomplishing something rather than staying stuck where you always have been.
