If I’m Crazy, You Are Too (Here’s Why)

The funniest thing happened at the gym this morning and it all happened in my head…

If you’d rather listen to this email than read it, please click here.

Here’s what happened: As usual, I got to the gym about 30 minutes before my workout. I was sitting on the floor, foam rolling, and watching the previous class workout.

I noticed a guy working out with the 6:30am class who isn’t normally there. I’ve seen him before, I know who he is, but he doesn’t usually take the 6:30am class.

I think to myself, “I bet he normally takes the 5:30am class. Maybe he overslept. I wonder if he’ll have to leave early to get to work. I wonder if he’s stressed out that he’s running late…

The 6:30am class was working out in two heats. This guy I was watching was in the second heat.

I thought to myself, “Why is he in the second heat if he has to leave early? Why wouldn’t he go in the first heat to make sure he has time to finish…?

I almost laughed out loud.

I have no idea if he was running late. I completely made up the fact that he was leaving early. Then I was questioning his heat because of something that was all a figment of my imagination.

I was not dealing with reality and I wasn’t in my own business. Double no bueno.

I must be insane. I was entertaining questions that were completely not real.

As I continued foam rolling I thought, “We all do this all the time.

We create our own problems, as well as the problems of others, all in our heads.

Most obviously, we do this when we worry about the future:

What if I put the weight back on? What if I have loose skin? What will I eat at Christmas? How am I going to workout on vacation? What if I need new tires? What will so & so do or say? How will I react if he/she does….”

I’m sharing my temporary insanity with you as a reminder. Stay present. Stay right here, right now, attached to what is actually happening and what you can actually do right now.

Stay in your lane.

Don’t worry about what others are thinking or doing.

Focus on what you’re doing right now or what you can do right now.

Stay in the present.

Don’t replay yesterday’s challenges over and over. Don’t worry about tomorrow, next week, next month or next year.

Be present and focus on what you can do right here, right now.
