Want to know how to eat carbs without getting fat? Today’s episode is all about what happens when you eat carbs and strategies for eating them in a way that reduces the chances they’ll be converted to & stored as fat. Plus, we’ll talk about the common mistakes that create an internal environment where even small amounts of carbs you consume are converted to & stored as fat.
Carbs aren’t bad. That’s just not true. The flip side of that is that they are not an essential fuel source, despite what you might have heard. They are, however, quite yummy and can be enjoyed in a way that doesn’t lead to weight gain. We’re clearing all this up in today’s episode so don’t miss it!

Hi Elizabeth,
How do I know / gauge if the exercise I’m doing is enough to deplete my glycogen storage?
Thank you!
Well literally, it would be muscle biopsy. But that’s not necessary. Are you burning fat or storing fat? Paying attention to your body and the results you’re getting. It’s not important that we know if we’re actually depleting it or not. What most of us want to know is are we putting on fat, losing fat, building muscle, not, etc. A combination of measurements, pictures and weight tell us what we need to know.
you have explained very nicely in many episodes about carbs and protein and how they are turned into glucose if we have too much in our system but what about fat? I know fat doesn’t go straight to body fat and it is actually very different but what happens if you’re eating too much fat?
by the way I love your podcasts and especially the geeky sciencey ones:)
Hi Teresa! You’re right – I didn’t mention fat because this was an episode about glucose. Fat doesn’t go straight to body fat. None of the macros do. First, our fuel needs are met. Excess fat is stored as fat, correct. Eating too much of anything means that the excess gets stored, and the nuances of carb and protein storage are often misunderstood, are related to glucose and were the focus of today’s episode. Thanks so much for listening and I’m so glad you enjoy the science episodes!
This is amazing! I’m on the second listen and I listen to all of your podcasts. This is a great reminder and I pick up new info every time I listen! Thank you so much!
Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for all your research and for all your help so far! I have listened to a few of your podcasts and I am already making some changes to my diet. I am on the keto diet so I was doing some things right but I had no idea about glucose filling up the muscles etc etc! This is the only thing that makes sense to me so far about why I was stalling in my weight loss! Thank you again and I am continuing to listen to your podcast I find them very helpful!
Sincerely,
Leslie Dalton
I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! Stay in touch!
