At times, we all feel stuck. Or unhappy. Or both.
In today’s episode I’m talking about the danger of participating in our own problems instead of participating in the solutions.
When we complain, blame, rehash the past, gossip, explain & justify, we are participating in the problem, not the solution.
When we participate in the problem, our energy, attention, time & effort are going to proving that we are right and that our struggle is real instead of going towards getting it right, regardless of the details.
This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite episodes of the podcast so far. You’ve got to hear this one!

Just found your show and have been loving it. I did want to make one comment about the use of teachers and students with poor behavior: teachers have been scapegoated for everything from lack of government funding for education to poverty itself. In fact teachers are often held to be the solution to problems of poverty they can’t solve. As a result of being given responsibility for things outside their control and being paid poorly and continually shamed (as by the superintendent in your example who himself gossiped and blamed at a broad stroke a great many teachers instead of asking himself what he could do differently), many good teachers are getting out of teaching as a matter of self preservation. Just thought I’d point this out. Thanks for your fantastic podcasts! You are truly inspirational!
Thank you so much for listening and even more for your providing your feedback! It’s so important to me! I think it’s easy to use our own experiences to add additional meaning and context to a story. But sometimes, that takes us away from the opportunity in it. This specific teacher/administrator situation was about solutions versus problems. Participating in solving things versus stating problems. No doubt in our own lives things have other layers, but, we ALL have an opportunity to go beyond stating problems and start participating in solutions. Everyone wins when that happens. While it can be made to be about blame and shame – this episode and this example weren’t about either.
