Rebuilding. That’s the phase of life I’m in.
It’s amazing. It’s exciting. It can be a little scary if I let it.
And here’s the best part – it’s possible every day, for every person, no matter what’s going on in your life.
I think that’s one of the most undervalued & underappreciated parts of life.
The ability to rebuild, in any and every moment.
All it takes is a little bit of courage and a clear idea of what you want.
A couple weeks ago I watched my family beach home be torn down. We’re rebuilding and I wanted to be there to see the demolition. (I shared one of the pictures on instagram)
I have a lifetime of amazing memories in that house – I spent every summer until college walking on the beach, grilling out with family, celebrating birthdays and listening to my grandfather tell stories on the porch.
It’s home.
But, it was damaged beyond repair and my family made the decision to tear it down and start fresh.
I was telling someone how I spent that day – in the freezing snow, doing jumping jacks for hours (to stay warm) while watching an excavator carefully destroy the house.
She said, “that must have been so sad.”
You know, it didn’t feel sad.
Sure, I have amazing memories in that home, but the beautiful thing about memories is that they live in my head and in my heart.
I had just as many memories after the final board fell as I did when the whole house was standing.
So really, it’s a gift. An incredible opportunity that exists for all of us in every aspect of our lives.
I could choose to see rebuilding as sad, as loss. Or I can accept that what matters most is always my heart and the opportunity to rebuild is a gift.
It doesn’t require huge, sweeping changes. It simply requires that we act on a decision to do something different in this moment. To choose something different. To be something different.
I don’t need permission to rebuild. I don’t need money. I don’t need more time.
I just need the desire in my heart to create something new and the discipline to take action.
Are you too comfortable doing what you’re doing?
Do you have dreams and desires you’re not acting on?
Do you feel like there’s more available to you but it’s too complicated or too hard or too scary?
Rebuild. Be the master architect of your life.
“Don’t plagiarize the lives of your parents, your peers, your teachers, your colleagues or your bosses. Be the criminal of their rules. Create your own life”. ~ James Altucher
Every day, make a choice that will help close the gap between the life you’re living and the life you want.
Maybe that’s about how you spend your money, or what you eat, how you move your body, the way you communicate, a phone call you make.
Stop limiting yourself.
Stop projecting your past into your future.
Stop making decisions based on expectations, norms, fear or judgement.
Create YOUR ideal life.
What is your ideal?
Get to work rebuilding.
Today.
Take a step.
The only chains that exist keeping you attached to your past are the ones you create by your choices.
