I believe in coaching. I believe in coaches. I believe that we grow faster and live better lives when we open ourselves up to the influence and insight of a coach. Today, I thought I’d share with you a little bit of how I coach – my style.
For me, it’s not about telling you what to do because, quite frankly, I believe there are MANY ways to create change. It’s not the process that matters most. It’s the obstacles in your way. What I do is help my clients identify and remove their barriers to change. Otherwise, NO approach will work. Have you ever experienced that? You’ve tried EVERYTHING but you’re still making excuses?
That’s because those stories – those excuses – THAT’S the real work. We can’t expect to leave those untouched and miraculously overcome them! That’s our work.
In this short coaching video, I’m tackling this email I got from a prospective client. Can you relate to any of these feelings? Here’s a little piece of the email…

And here’s my short response to it. This is aligned with the work we do inside the 12 Weeks to Transformation.

Eating doesn’t lead to more eating. Your thoughts do!
You will learn far more from action than you will from thinking about action!
You don’t need to know the perfect tool. Be consistent with an imperfect tool.

Let me kick this off with a little context for you. I just released episode 613 of the Primal Potential podcast which is all about my recent trip to Bermuda and striking a beautiful balance of fully embracing the experience and making choices that make me feel amazing.
At the start of the episode, I shared that vacations used to be super stressful for me. On the one hand, I’d think, “Awe come on. It’s vacation. Live it up. Eat what you want. It’s a special occasion.”
On the other hand, I’d be freaking out about weight gain, about overeating, about how I looked in a bathing suit and how unhappy I was with myself and my health. Even if I went whole hog and indulged, I didn’t feel good about it. I felt frustrated, guilty, full of shame and lethargic.
In the episode, I share how my insecurities often kept me on the sidelines. I worried about what others might be thinking about me and I didn’t participate fully in anything. (In fact, in the episode, I talk about a time I went jet-skiing, fell off the back and couldn’t pull myself back on because of my weight…)
But here’s the important message that I explore in episode 613. My vacations weren’t the reason for my “all-or-nothing” attitude. The trip wasn’t to blame for the “Eh! Live a little! It’s a special occasion” mindset. To be honest, I had those thoughts when I would go out to dinner. I told myself that story when someone brought donuts to work or it was a holiday. I sold myself that story after a stressful day of work.
It wasn’t a vacation issue. It wasn’t a holiday issue. It wasn’t a travel issue. It was a mindset issue.
The same is true about my insecurities. I wasn’t sitting on the sidelines because I was overweight. I wasn’t hiding or feeling ashamed because of the size of my pants. Even after losing over 100 pounds, I told myself the same stories. That I didn’t want to embarrass myself or have people see my body.
It wasn’t a size issue. It wasn’t a body issue. It was a mindset issue.
The same is true about temptation, motivation, discipline and willpower. In episode 613, I talk about how I really like pancakes and waffles, but I didn’t eat them while on vacation. Every day, breakfast was bacon, eggs, vegetables, black coffee and water. Someone commented that they hope one day they won’t be tempted by indulgences.
It’s not the pancakes. It’s not the cookie. They aren’t the issue. Temptation is a mindset issue. Motivation is a mindset issue. Discipline and willpower are mindset issues.
I could sell myself a story that the pancakes are super tempting. That they look amazing and I want them so badly. The desire for pancakes comes from my thoughts about them.
Or, I could create a different story. Yeah, they look good. I’ve had them before, I know what they taste like. Having sugar and starch in the morning makes me more tired and I don’t want to be tired. I want to feel amazing. Because of those thoughts, I’m not tempted by the pancakes.
Mindset. It’s everything. If you don’t believe me, listen to episode 613 right now so you can see these ideas in practice.
If you’re ready to take things to the next level of application and action, make sure you’re on the wait list for our Summer 2019 12 Weeks to Transformation! Mindset is our biggest area of focus and it’s a game changer.
When you change the way you think, absolutely EVERYTHING gets easier!

I’m obsessed with this spicy coleslaw! I have it as a side dish with burgers or steak and it’s amazing as the base for fish tacos (I usually choose to go without tortillas).

Spicy Coleslaw
For the slaw:
- 1 head of green cabbage, finely chopped or sliced with a mandolin
- 1 head of red cabbage, finely chopped or sliced with a mandolin
- 1 jalapeno, chopped (omit if you want it less spicy)
- 3 large scallions (green onions) finely chopped
For the dressing:
- 1/2 cup Primal Kitchen Chipotle Lime Mayo*
- 1/2 cup Primal Kitchen Turmeric Lemon salad dressing*
- 1.5 tbsp hot sauce of your choice (omit if you want it less spicy)
- 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- Juice of one lime
In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, green onion and jalapeno. In a separate bowl, mix the dressing ingredients and pour over salad. Mix well. For best results, let the coleslaw sit for a few hours before serving to allow flavors to develop. You can add salt to taste, but since the mayo and dressing have seasoning, I didn’t feel that any salt was needed.
The first night I made this I added steak. The second night, I added white fish, like deconstructed tacos. This is absolutely going to be a new summer staple for me! I’m excited for leftovers!
In October 2019, our relationship with Thrive Market changed. They decided to put their marketing dollars in avenues outside of podcasting but we still think they’re a good choice if you’re looking to save money on health & personal care products.
If you’re a cabbage lover, you might also love my favorite cabbage salad bowl I often enjoy for breakfast!

I’m celebrating because I’m on vacation, in BERMUDA! I wanted to take a minute to share with you my intention/strategy for this trip.
If you’d rather listen to this email than read it, please click here. Otherwise, keep reading below.
Vacation used to be a total free-for-all. I’d eat whatever I wanted, as much as I wanted because, hey, ‘it’s vacation’. The problem was, I’d feel awful. Heavy. Tired. Self-conscious.
I’d come home feeling like I had to crawl out of a hole I dug for myself. It sucked. It wasn’t worth it and I didn’t have as much fun as I could have because the trip was clouded by thoughts about food and food choices. No bueno.
Then, I swung in the opposite direction. For a couple years, I sat on the sidelines. I was militant about my work, my workouts and my food choices. Sure, I was rested and my energy was great, but I was using “structure” as a barrier to connection and experience.
I told myself this story that indulging equals fun and not indulging equals not fun.
Fortunately, I now realize that’s total BS. It’s not either/or. And if it feels like it is, you’re doing it wrong.
I can eat in a way that makes me feel amazing AND really treat myself AND enjoy every bite of food that passes my lips without missing out. It’s really all about the story you tell yourself and the perspective you choose. There is always another way. Dozens of other ways. I will be looking for foods I will LOVE and enjoy eating that will also make me feel amazing (helllllllo ceviche & fresh fish!)
I see every day as an opportunity to enjoy life more and live in alignment with what I want most, so I thought I’d take a few minutes to share my perspective on this trip.
First – I want to feel amazing every single day. I want to feel happy, lighthearted, present, confident and energized.
My first step is to get clear on what kinds of things will make me feel that way and what kinds of things won’t make me feel that way.
Do:
Get lots of sleep
Journal every morning
Sweat every day
Play every day – prioritize FUN and connection
Drink lots of water
Don’t:
Overeat
Make choices that make me feel crappy
Submit to insecurity. Sexy is in how you carry yourself and drama ain’t sexy.
Work too much
Take anything too seriously
Worry
There’s a real simple filter I’ll put my choices through: will this make me feel amazing? If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no. Maybe a bite of the dessert will make me feel amazing but having the whole thing is a NO.
Yes, I’ll work every day. I’ve set boundaries for myself that work is between 5am-10am.
Yes, I’ll drink alcohol. I’ll only choose drinks that are really worth it and I won’t have more than 1 drink per day. (More than that and I’m likely to not feel how I want to feel.)
Yes, I might indulge in sugar, but only if it’s worth it and only in a way that still allows me to feel how I want to feel (amazing). (As long as the internet connection is good, I plan to post everything I eat/drink on my IG stories)
However, my biggest focus isn’t on work, workouts, food or alcohol. It’s about connection.
Worrying about how I look in a bathing suit does NOT foster connection with the boyfriend. In fact, it’s a barrier to it. So, I’ll be choosing PRESENCE over projection.
Worrying about the emails that come in at 11am won’t help me connect with the boyfriend. That would be a barrier to connection, so I’ll keep my attention on the moment we’re in.
While these are my vacation practices, they’re also totally applicable to TODAY! To this week at work! For your dinner out tomorrow or absolutely any other time so try them on for size!
I asked you guys over in the Primal Potential FB group if you wanted to hear about podcast about the trip & the strategy in action and the answer was a resounding ‘yes’ so be sure to stay tuned for that soon!

My friend! It’s our final day of this week of mental & emotional spring cleaning!
Think more simply.
Much of the noise and distraction in our minds and nearly all of our overwhelm stems from the fact that we’re just overcomplicating it.
We’re pulling in the irrelevant past and mulling over the uncertain future.
Be here now.
One of the quotes I’ve been using incessantly of late is:
“Birds don’t need an ornithologist in order to fly.”
~ Mark Nepo
Said more simply: birds can take flight without an expert explaining the mechanics of flying.
You can create create change without understanding your thoughts or patterns.
You can make a great choice when you’re emotional.
You can make a great choice without knowing what you’ll do tomorrow or trusting that you’ll keep your word.
Stay in the moment. Be where your feet are. Win the moment you’re in.
Nothing more, nothing less.
The rest is a distraction.
This is a tool you can use again and again, moment after moment, struggle after struggle.
It’s always available to you, and always a powerful redirect. However, it’s power comes from USING it, not from knowing it, so you have to put it into practice in your life.
The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.
E
PS: For those of you who want to keep doing the work and creating change in your lives, think about if working with me in the 12 Weeks to Transformation this summer might be your next step. You can learn more about it and get on the wait list here.

Are you doing the work? Putting in the effort? Just like your closet won’t clean itself, you can’t read about refreshing your mind and expect it to take hold. You have to do the work and it is SO worth it.
Today’s tip comes to you from my dear friend Brooke Thomas – you met her on episode 589 of the Primal Potential podcast.
Take it away, Brooke!
When it comes to cleaning out the clutter of our minds, I’ve noticed there is always ONE thing above anything else that keeps us from living the life we truly desire.
I’ve talked to thousands of women who are looking for something more out of their life and it’s the same thing for all of them regardless of age, income or background.
I’m talking about FEAR. It’s not serving you and it’s time to let it go! Fear of criticism, fear of failure, and maybe, fear of success! You’re probably thinking ‘whoa! I can’t just throw out the fears that have been holding me back for all these years! ‘ You’re right. It’s not that easy. But you know what you CAN do today?
You CAN JUST DO IT AFRAID!
Truly overcoming our fears takes intention and purposeful work. BUT ANYONE CAN CHOOSE to do something even though they are afraid. It is the first step in getting you to the other side.
TIP: CHOOSE to take the FEELING of FEAR and turn it into EXCITEMENT towards walking into your destiny! 5-4-3-2-1-GO!
CHALLENGE: Today I want you to do something that scares you.
It could be something like:
Make that phone call you’ve been putting off
Start a new hobby because YOU want to
Try something you’ve always wanted to try but were too worried what other people would think.
Tell someone what you’ve been too afraid to say
Say YES to that big project.
Decide to go for that big dream that’s been whispering to you.
JUST DO IT AFRAID.
Trust in the life that was MEANT FOR YOU!
I promise you will feel so FREE once you take that step. You’ll feel your confidence rise every time you do it.
You can watch a video I’ve done on acting through fear here.

Today we are continuing our spring cleaning series with another strategy from my dear friend Terri Lynn!
At the bottom of this post, you will learn more about Terri Lynn and how you can connect with her and her work!
Last Month I Marie Kondoed My Life (Real Spring Cleaning)
If you are on Instagram, have Netflix or simply don’t live under a large rock you more than likely have heard of Marie Kondo! I began binging her show while cooking dinner every night and quickly knew that the KonMari method was something I wanted to dive into. I ordered up her book, finished watching her entire show, read that book cover to cover and made a commitment to completely Marie Kondo my home in one month!
KonMari Method
For those who are not familiar with her program, she begins by categorizes absolutely everything in your home. Category by category you hold or touch every single item in your home and ask yourself if it brings you joy. If it doesn’t, you either toss it or give it to charity! Night #1, me and my husband grabbed absolutely everything in our clothing closets including shoes, hats, underwear and threw it on our suddenly-looking-super-small king-sized bed. Holy sh*t!! Insert tiny breakdown. Then we got to work! By the end of the night we had both removed well over 70% of what had previously taking up tenancy in our clothing closets and we were SHOCKED! How could we have that much in our homes, in our lives that don’t bring us joy?!
For 3-4 nights a week we dove head first into a different category within our home and time and time again we were shocked how much we chose to let go of and how much extra space we suddenly had in our previously packed full 2000 sq. ft. home! By the time we completed the full KonMari method we had let go of well over 50% of our belongings and honestly, many of our closets look so empty in the most wonderful, joyful way!
Living the Marie Kondo Lifestyle
What shocked me the most while implementing her method was how often throughout the day I found myself asking, ‘does this bring me joy?’ I would be in a meeting with my employees chatting about the new program we were creating and would suddenly realize that this new program truly wasn’t bringing me any joy beyond finances! I was hanging out with a girlfriend and suddenly saw her in a completely new light, ‘this relationship doesn’t bring me joy anymore.’ I found myself analyzing my morning routine and realized the HITT workout I was doing 3x/week was no longer joyful at all for me! #byebye
On the flip side, I began to learn so much more about myself, the things that fired me up and make me feel oh so joyful! I realized that despite being a total ‘city chick’ I am obsessed with the outdoors! I suddenly recognized that despite working from home and being able to get away with hoodies and lulu’s for clothing, dressing up is something I love to do, even if it’s just for me! I also had a revelation that spending time with the grandparents that raised me for a portion of my life was one of my favourite things!
Let’s Take Some Action – Spring Cleaning for Your Mind
Maybe this email was the final straw in breaking the camel’s back and motivating you to dive into the KonMari method ASAP or, maybe this simply isn’t a good time for you. Either way, I want to give you an action step to begin to implement the key to this method into your life TODAY!
Choose an item to wear on your body that brings you immense joy. Maybe it’s a ring you got from your grandmother for your 18th birthday or a bracelet that you got from your partner as an anniversary gift! Either way, make sure it’s something you can wear daily without it beginning to smell like a barn in Southern Manitoba. Whatever it is, choose it in your mind’s eye and claim it as your ‘joy reminder.’ Our subconscious has the amazing ability of actually remembering the meaning you placed on an item simply by setting an intention around it!
Now, every time that this item catches your attention I want you to ask yourself, ‘does my current reality bring me joy?’ This will end up being an ARRAY of things! Maybe you’ll be driving to work and recognize how little joy your job truly brings you. Maybe you’ll be getting dressed and recognize that your 8-year-old scratchy peach wool sweater no longer brings you joy. Or maybe you’ll be having coffee with a sweet friend and recognize how truly joyful they make you! Whatever it is, don’t judge it. Just ask it one simple question…
Does This Bring Me Joy?
I would absolutely love to hear from you as you apply this practice into your life! I pretty much live on Instagram, so go ahead and give me a follow and shoot me a message on there!
