I believe that it is within our power to feel amazing every day. Yes, things will happen that are outside our control. Maybe you get rear ended on your way to work or your air conditioner dies. Maybe someone close to you hurts you. All those things will happen. Worse things will happen. Smaller annoyances will occur. And still, it is within your power to feel amazing every day. Through your attitude, perspective, sleep, food choices, and so much more, you can make each day amazing.
A couple weeks ago, I shared that for some undefined period of time, I’ll be sharing with you what that looks like for me each day.
Today, feeling as amazing as possible included a couple things that aren’t quite the norm:
- A breakfast burrito (on a Nuco coconut wrap)
- A nap
The nap is definitely the most unusual of the two. Generally speaking, I’m not a napper. Though I believe in the power of naps, I’d rather be super tired for an early bedtime than get a nap in during the day. But, today called for a nap.
I woke up naturally around 4am ready to take on the day. I hopped out of bed and worked for a couple hours before a 6am physical therapy appointment followed by a 7am workout. It was the first of two workouts and the second was around 3pm. An early bedtime isn’t an option tonight because I have an 8pm video chat with my Primal Potential Masters Club and it takes me a while to wind down after the energy of that group.
Since I’m not here to fight against myself but rather to be militantly on my own side and take impeccable care of myself, I took a 40 minute nap this afternoon and it was GLORIOUS. Naps aren’t lazy, friend, when you truly need the rest. But let’s all be honest with ourselves…there’s a difference between being tired because you’re doing all the things and being tired because you’re not taking good care of yourself. Ya hear me? Eat clean. Drink water. Move your body. Go to bed earlier. Then, when needed, nap.
My morning workout was a repeat fit test.
90 seconds max calories on the assault bike
90 seconds max calories on the erg rower
90 seconds max burpees
3 min rest between each
My afternoon workout was hot as hell. I think I need to focus on drinking more water in this heat. After a solo warm-up and a group warm-up, we did a 10 minute EMOM: 2 overhead squats every minute on the minute for 10 minutes followed by 4 rounds for time of a 200m run and 25 air squats. Hot. Sweaty. Done.
Shall we re-visit the breakfast burrito and how it was part of making today amazing?
I’m not usually at the gym first thing in the morning, except on days when I workout twice. There’s this great coffee shop down the road with killer breakfast burritos but I don’t want to eat a flour tortilla. So, I got it to go and when I got home, I swapped out the flour tortilla for a Nuco Coconut wrap from Thrive Market! Totally hit the spot. I’m not a big breakfast eater but with two workouts and an extra early morning, it totally did the job.
…
This “How Amazing” blog series has been going on for a couple weeks now and I’d love for you to share with me how you are making your days amazing! I want to hear it! Leave a comment and share some of your strategies!

Light tomorrow with today.
I wrote this Elizabeth Barrett Browning quote in my journal this morning. Light tomorrow with today. It reminds me that I have the power to make my life better or worse. I have the power to make my life easier or more difficult. Much of that hinges on the decisions I make today.
Life is so short and I want to make every day as great as it can be. It’s not easy, but it is worth it and it’s always possible.
When my alarm went off this morning, I didn’t want to get up. I wanted to cancel my workout and go back to bed, but I didn’t. The decision had already been made. If I reinforce the habit of renegotiating decisions based on how I feel in a moment, I would rapidly deplete the power of my word and my trust in myself. I refuse to go that way.
I shifted my energy from not wanting to get up to coming up with 3 reasons I want to get up. Remember – we can convince ourselves of anything.
- I want to get up because I want a cup of coffee.
- I want to get up because I want to make progress on my book that I believe will have a major impact. People need it! I need to get crackin!
- I want to get up because this day is a gift! I don’t want to waste it!
Sure, I could convince myself that I don’t want to get up. That I’m tired. That it’s too early. That I don’t want to work out. But I can also convince myself of something very different.
I carried that practice with me all day. Instead of thinking that I didn’t want to stop my work to go to the gym, I listed 3 reasons I do want to go to the gym.
- I always feel significantly happier after a workout.
- I want to become a better athlete.
- I don’t want to take for granted the fact that I can workout. My body is able and that’s not something I’ll take for granted.
Today’s workout was a fast one but definitely a challenge! Intensity is what you make it and today I brought my best effort for twelve 100 meter sprints. The first 6 sprints included carrying a 25 lb wreck bag and the 2nd 6 sprints didn’t include any added weight. Whew!
I practiced this perspective with food choices, too. Yes, I wanted something sweet. I wanted a cocktail. I thought about 3 reasons why I want to eat clean & take impeccable care of my body.
- Eating well feels infinitely better than not eating well.
- Consistency matters to me.
- I want to be someone who takes impeccable care of myself every day.
Brunch was very easy and super delicious. I mixed a can of wild caught salmon (from Thrive Market) with some Chipotle Lime Mayo (from Thrive Market) and included a slice of bacon, some tomatoes and hemp hearts (from Thrive Market). See a pattern here? I had that delish mixture on top of cauliflower rice.
I grilled a steak for dinner and made a “risotto” of sorts with cauliflower rice, goat cheese, tomatoes, garlic and basil. This meal basically reminded me that I’m winning at life. 🙂
Make yourself proud today, okay friend? Life is short and you deserve your best.

Yesterday I sent an email to the Primal Potential VIP list. It was short and simple. It said,
Do you know how amazing you could feel?
Do you know how awesome you would feel if you were consistently optimizing every area of your life?
Why not?
I got an email in response that says, “Why do you make the assumption we don’t know? Why don’t you give your readers the benefit of the doubt?”
Great questions.
First, to be clear, I didn’t make any assumption; I simply asked questions. Folks who listen to the podcast know that I’m a huge believer in the power of questions. I value the questions a whole lot more than I value the answers.
I am fully aware that someone can say, “Yes! I do know how amazing I can feel!!” Awesome!
Even in that case, we’re never too good to be better!
I also know that some people don’t know how amazing they can feel and I want them to start thinking about what they can do today to create that feeling.
Some people might know how great they can feel, but they aren’t doing the work.
I want to get everyone in all categories thinking about how they can make every day a great day.
If you know how amazing you can feel, there’s opportunity for you.
If you don’t know how amazing you can feel, there’s opportunity for you.
No assumptions, just questions and opportunities.
While I absolutely give myself the benefit of the doubt and I’m absolutely proud of how far I’ve come, the truth for me is I don’t think I know how amazing I can feel. I’m still learning. I’m still getting better every single day and I work to encourage myself to keep getting better.
My favorite mug is the one that says, “wildly curious about my potential & fiercely determined to create it.”
It’s not a critical perspective. It doesn’t reflect doubt. It’s not negative in any way. I personally want to continue to get better and better and I find that exciting.
I respect that not everyone feels the same way, but all I can do is share my thoughts from my perspective.
That’s all I have to say today.

In episode 502 of the Primal Potential podcast, I talk about lessons I’ve learned in 4 years of business that beautifully apply to life in general. One of the most valuable is the importance of embracing the mundane.
It’s so easy to get excited about a fresh start. It’s so easy to avoid doing what you don’t want to do when you don’t want to do it.
On the flip side, it’s entirely transformative to do what is right because it’s right, whether you want to or not. Every day presents countless opportunities to practice that.
For example, I’m up in Maine at my family’s beach house this weekend for some birthday celebrations. Sure, it would be easy to cut loose and relax. I’d absolutely prefer to sleep in and not work than get up early and spend my days working. But, I’m not looking for easy. I’m looking for progress. I’m looking to make myself proud.
Sure, it would be easy to throw caution to the wind and eat whatever I want this weekend because “birthdays”. But that wouldn’t make me feel my best. It wouldn’t make me be my best.
Whether it’s Tuesday or Saturday, whether I’m home or away from home, whether it’s a holiday or not, I begin my days by asking and answering, “How will I make myself proud today?”
Today, that involves getting up at 5am and working.
It includes working on my book even though it’s not easy.
It means not having the breakfast my mom made because, quite simply, I’m not hungry.
It means visualizing my very best life with positive anticipation instead of feeling frustrated that there’s still work to be done.
It means getting in a workout because it will make me feel great even though I don’t feel like it beforehand.
It means drinking water instead of alcohol and going to bed at a reasonable time instead of staying up late.
It means not eating the donuts on the counter or the brownies in the fridge because I’m quite certain I wouldn’t feel like they worth it afterwards.
Every day it means something a little different, but those of some of the things it means to me today.
Though I skipped my mom’s breakfast, I had a great meal once I got hungry later in the morning. I topped an avocado with some ground sausage, cauliflower rice and hemp hearts. Delish! (I talk all about hemp hearts in a recent episode of the podcast – don’t miss that one.)
A few hours later, I had a packet of Artisana Coconut Butter I brought up with me. These are a go-to for me when I’m away from home or when I don’t feel like cooking/cleaning up. Just out of curiosity, I checked the pricing today to compare them between Thrive Market and Amazon. A 10-pack on Amazon is $23.74 and the same 10-pack is $16.99 on Thrive Market! As someone who gets excited when I find a penny on the ground, I’m so stoked to save $6+ on these guys!
I went out to dinner with my mom and her husband and had an amazing lobster cobb salad. This place has the BEST salads and it was worth every single bite!
I kept the workout really simple. In the morning, I did some body weight work with hip thrusts and push-ups and later in the afternoon (after the storms cleared), I went for a 2 mile run.
Here’s to making today, and every day, amazing!
In October 2019, our relationship with Thrive Market changed. They decided to put their marketing dollars in avenues outside of podcasting but we still think they’re a good choice if you’re looking to save money on health & personal care products.

One of the concepts I’ve been working on consistently within my Primal Potential Masters Club is intentionally & emotionally connecting with the very best version of yourself. When I say emotionally, I mean generating enthusiasm, excitement and positive anticipation. What is that person like? How do they think? Act? Behave?
When you’re considering an excuse, how would the best version of you respond or think? It’s a really powerful tool. I used it yesterday during my workout.
As I’ve shared, I don’t love to run. It doesn’t come easily yet, because I haven’t earned it. Yesterday, after doing some heavy back squats, I did 4-400m runs (a mile total, broken into 400m time trials). I decided to do each run as the best version of myself. Instead of thinking that it was hard, instead of allowing my breathing to become irregular, I brought my conscious, enthusiastic attention to how the very best version of me would run.
I made sure my breathing was slow & even, thinking about how I’d breathe that way at my highest level of fitness. I thought about my feet striking the ground quickly and lightly. I kept my body relaxed, the way it would be if running was easy and I was in my best physical shape.
Honestly, it made a big difference. The runs felt easier and I almost enjoyed them!
No doubt, that is part of making my days amazing.
In other news, I didn’t sleep well last night. I had nightmares and woke up frequently throughout the night. Though that doesn’t change my wake-up time, I will be sure to get to bed early tonight.
I got up at 4:30 this morning to make sure I had time to do all I need to before my morning workout. There are usually two days each week where I workout twice instead of just once and today was one of those days. I drank water, coffee, got some work done and then headed to the gym.
After warming up, the workout was fast and hard: as many burpees as possible in 7 minutes. The goal was to stay consistent in my pacing all the way through and, of course, not stop. That’s a fantastic workout when you don’t have any equipment!
My afternoon workout…didn’t happen. Though before today, I’ve been fortunate enough to only have 2 migraines in my entire life, I started to get one today. I don’t get standard migraines – mine have always been atypical migraines, usually impacting my vision. A couple hours after my morning workout, I started to feel the pressure in my head and the dizziness set in. There was no doubt that a big part of feeling amazing today required not going back to the gym and using that time to relax and do some deep breathing.
On the food front…
Because I didn’t have much for dinner last night, I was pretty darn hungry this morning! After my first workout I had my cabbage salad bowl. This is one of my fave brunch meals ever! It’s super filling and delicious! However, if I wasn’t working out today OR I was snacking or having 3+ meals, it would certainly be too much fat & too much total fuel. But, because of my workouts and because it’s one of only 2 meals (and no snacks), it fits the bill and makes me feel amazing!
After the afternoon workout I drove up to the Maine (where I’ll spend this weekend) and had steak and salad with my mom & her husband. Yum!
The most important thing for me to win this afternoon and feel amazing is to make time for my evening meditation (especially after hours in traffic) and get to bed EARLY. Your girl is beat and I have lots and lots of writing to do this weekend!
Win the day! Make yourself proud!

One of my clients summed it up perfectly with a post she shared inside our private Facebook group. It said,
Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel.
I’m in that pursuit. It takes a lot of forms.
- Sleep
- Nutrition
- Attitude/Perspective
- Workouts
- Body care
- Meditation
- Fun
I checked all those boxes today, which feels pretty darn amazing! The highlight was my massage/graston/cupping appointment. My trainer recommended a massage therapist and holy moly did she ever work on my back! I left feeling less tense and with less soreness than I have had in weeks! Yes, it’s an investment, but what’s more worth it than my health?
One of the primary influences on how amazing I feel is what, when & how much I eat. Personally, I feel best when most of my dietary intake comes from vegetables, then fat, then protein (very little starch and sugar). I feel best when I have 2 bigger meals each day and no snacks. Brunch was a big plate of cauliflower rice with bacon & eggs. I had a dinner event and was told we’d have dinner there but there weren’t a ton of good options. I had 2 chicken wings, a piece of cheese and a lot of water. Sure, everyone at the event was drinking, but I feel most amazing when I don’t drink.
Someone messaged me the other day and asked what it looks like when I want to make a choice that doesn’t make me feel amazing. That happens every day! Today, for example, I thought about sipping a cocktail at the dinner event. My approach to those moments is to keep it super simple. There’s no negotiation. There’s no debate. I don’t run through a million justifications of why it will be okay or how I earned it. I simply ask, “Will it make me feel amazing?” It’s either yes or no and there’s no drama or emotion. Would drinking tonight make me feel amazing? Or would not drinking make me feel amazing? Not drinking. The end.
I think it’s a huge energy vaccuum to negotiate incessantly. Keep it simple. It’s not that complicated.
My scheduled workout included some overhead lifts and burpees, but since I just got a massage, I want to avoid aggravating my neck and back for at least a few hours. While I could make some big story about how I should skip the workout today, I know I feel best when I workout. There’s a lot of movement I can do that will allow my neck & back to rest. I headed to the gym and decided to do a heavy back squat EMOM and some 400m runs with full recovery in between.
Do what makes you feel your best!
See you tomorrow!

The other day I announced that I’m starting a new blog series. Make sure you read what it is and why I’m doing it. Seriously – that part is important. It will take you 30 second. Read it now if you haven’t already.
My goal is to see just how amazing I can feel if I do everything as close to “best for me” as possible.

I think I’m going to change the format of these posts, but I’d love your feedback. I don’t think it’s interesting or helpful for you all to see the hour-by-hour breakdown, especially when so much of it is just “work”. I’ll try something less specific today and would love to hear your feedback.
I woke up a few minutes early today because I had a 6am PT appointment for some dry needling of my shoulder. I bounced out of bed at 4:20am to make sure I could get things done before leaving home at 5:45am.
My appointment was an hour. Though I’m not a fan of needles, the dry needling is a priority right now for working through some pain & tightness in my back and shoulder. We also did some body tempering – it’s the kind of good pain you love to hate.
I got home and immediately recorded tomorrow’s podcast (no, I’m not always out ahead of podcast recordings) because I wanted to be done recording for the start of the CrossFit Games streaming this morning! Mission accomplished! Tomorrow’s episode is all about hemp hearts. I started including them more regularly after I got my Viome test results back. I need to dial back on nuts and seeds, but I can still get texture and nutty flavor from hemp hearts because they don’t contain oxalates or phytates. They’re also a complete source of protein (they contain all 9 essential amino acids) and contain both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. The specific omega 6 fatty acids they include are anti-inflammatory, not pro inflammatory (many omega 6 fatty acids are pro inflammatory). Don’t miss tomorrow’s episode!
I’m not gonna lie – most of my time over the next few days is going to be spent watching The Games! I find them incredibly inspiring and exciting! As I watch, I’ll definitely be working & doing lots of mobility work!
Lunch was really simple and easy: a big salad (pictured on my Instagram story) with arugula, cabbage, avocado, bacon, egg, hemp hearts and tomato.
I broke away from the CrossFit Games to head to the gym. I got in a good warmup with a whole bunch of mobility and then we did a sweaty group warmup with biking, running and jump roping. I modified the actual workout a little bit to make sure I got the right stimulus (fast & hard).
- 200m run
- 50 double unders
- 50 situps
- 200m run

It was a very, very sweaty workout in the heat & humidity! Before heading home, I did some Crossover Symmetry work for my shoulder.
I had to race home for a live webinar with some of my summer clients & when I finished, it was time for dinner! A cold bowl of lobster with some tomatoes and avocado! Yum! Simple, cold, delicious and fat loss friendly!
I’m headed to bed by 9pm tonight because I’m pretty tired! Sweet dreams!
See you tomorrow!

It’s the last day of the month – not just any month, but my favorite month of the year. July is the first full month of summer, my birthday month and more recently, the anniversary month of Primal Potential!
I took a few minutes to reflect on the great things that have happened this month. I’d love for you to do the same.
Instead of thinking about how fast the time went by or what you didn’t do or what challenges came up – what was great? What was good? What did you accomplish? What were some of the highlights?
Some of the great moments for me include:
- Scheduling a retreat with the Primal Potential Masters Club
- Celebrating my birthday with my mom & sister
- Spending lots of time at the beach house
- Completing a big training that was important to me
- Completing the first draft of my book
- Spending quality time with one of my girlfriends
- Going swimming in the rain
- Hitting a couple PRs in the gym
- Getting the results of my microbiome assessment
It’s so easy to rush from moment to moment. Pause for a few minutes today to really dwell on the good moments, whether they are big or small.
Today is a super busy and abnormal day. I drove up to Maine last night because I have an appointment not far from there this afternoon. No doubt my “routine” will look quite different!
4:45am: Rise and shine! Stretching, journaling and meditation
5:15 – 8:30am: Work and coffee
8:30 – 9am: Breakfast with my mom and her husband
I only had about 1/2 cup of the broccoli/cauliflower/steak scramble she made. I was a little hungry, so I had a little fuel. We’re headed out to lunch later so I wanted to keep it small.
9 – 11am: Work & shower (showering and getting dressed usually takes me no more than 15 minutes. The only makeup I wear routinely is mascara). Plus, I had a bottle of Kevita Lemon Cayenne “kombucha”. My mom heard me mention it in a podcast so she had it for me when I got up to the beach last night! So sweet! Nutrition facts are in my Instagram story (if you’re seeing this within 24 hours)
11 – 3pm: Errands, lunch with mom and personal appointment
We stopped at one of my favorite restaurants in Portsmouth, NH – BRGR Bar – and I had a shaved brussels sprout salad with blackened mahi mahi. It was delish!
3 – 7pm: Driving back down to Cape Cod – all the traffic! I drank about a liter of water along the way.
7 – 8pm: Work and food – dinner tonight was pepperoni. Yup. True. It was in the fridge and the traffic threw me off my dinner game but it’s all good!
8 – 9:30pm: Live webinar with my Primal Potential Masters Club
BED.

Where’s yesterday’s post? I didn’t make it, friend. I had a second day of training, a lot of work to do and a long ride in traffic back to Cape Cod. I feel really great about the day and my choices, but the blog didn’t happen yesterday. Onward. Let’s talk about today.
The other day, someone asked a great question in response to a daily blog where I shared I was getting up at my normal time despite being up late. She asked:
I have a question regarding sleep: isn’t it counterproductive if you wake up at 4-5am regardless of the time at which you went to bed? I get it’s important for you to do things “no matter what”, but if the goal is to feel amazing, shouldn’t you strive for 7-8 hours of sleep every night? Just wondering
Awesome question and I wanted to share my response with all of you…
The key question is “counter productive for who?” For me? No. You know why? Because I adjust my time to bed when I’m tired, not my time to wake. That is what works for me. Feeling amazing doesn’t mean I drag through my days with a great attitude despite feeling like crap. It means adjusting my choices to feel amazing. Sure, every once in a while I’m out late. How my day starts has a HUGE impact on how it goes. Getting up, getting things done, being proactive – that makes my day amazing. So, if I’m tired, I’ll go to bed earlier. I still get up at the same time. It’s nothing near counterproductive, for me.
That’s that. Onto today.
I absolutely wanted to hit snooze this morning and grab another 30 minutes of sleep but I didn’t. It’s Monday. It’s a new day. It’s a blank slate and I want it to start on the strongest note possible!
Part of that strong note was getting right out of bed. The second strong note was a cup of coffee! My first cup of coffee is one of the brightest spots in my day!
4:45 – 5am: A few sips of water, coffee, gratitude & journal
5 – 6:15am: Work
6:15 – 6:30am: Get ready for the gym
6:30 – 8:30am: Workout (includes drive time)
I haven’t had a rest day (a day off from working out intensely) in about 8 days and I know I need them. I’ll be in New Hampshire all day tomorrow so I decided to workout today knowing that I won’t tomorrow. I did keep it a bit lighter on the load and intensity.
- Warmup with Crossover Symmetry
- Shoulder stability work
- Lacrosse ball rolling
- Warm up on rower
- Warm up with resistance band
- 500m time trial on ski erg
- Rest 3 minutes
- 10 rounds of :30 on/:30 off – ski erg & 90% max effort
- Stretching cool down
8:30 – 12pm: Work! Monday’s are my favorite!
12 – 1pm: Lunch & meditation
- Large salad with shredded raw cabbage, arugula, tomato, cucumber, jalapeno, tomato, nectarine, 2 slices bacon and 1 egg
- I mix it up with my Oxo salad chopper and the moisture from the egg eliminates the need for dressing
1 – 2pm: Live Q&A webinar with some of my summer clients
2 – 6pm: Work (with short break for second meditation)
6 – 8:30pm: Drive up to Maine – I rarely eat in the car but after being away for the weekend and heading up north for just a day, it was the way I rolled today. I had two packets of Artisana Coconut butter on the drive and called it dinner. Ideal? Nope. But, it was absolutely the best way for me to feel amazing today. My workout was lighter, I wasn’t particularly hungry and I was all over the place!
8:30 – 10pm: Chatting with my mom before bed
I’ve got a packed day tomorrow so I’m heading to bed!
