What People Are Saying About Chasing Cupcakes

Most people don’t read books. That absolutely blows my mind and here’s why:

NOTHING has helped me help myself more than reading has.

To change my patterns of behavior (binge eating, over spending, making excuses, being lazy), I had to change the way I thought.

But HOW do you change the way you think when the way you’ve always thought is, simply, the only way you know how to think?!

For me, exposing myself to other people’s ideas, perspectives and strategies was the most powerful way to break through my own broken & dysfunctional thought patterns.

I’m on a MISSION to encourage people to read more and, of course, I’d love for you to start with Chasing Cupcakes! In fact, you can even LISTEN to it on Audible! Start easy! If you can listen to music or a podcast or the radio, you can listen to a book!

If it helps, I thought I’d share with you what people are saying about Chasing Cupcakes. You can also check out answers to the common questions I’ve been asked about it here.

Top 10ish Questions About Chasing Cupcakes

In case you missed it, my first book – Chasing Cupcakes – was released into the world on January 10th, 2019! I am beyond excited and overwhelmed with gratitude for your support! I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the book so I thought I’d take a few minutes to share my thoughts on the most common ones. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments! And, while you’re here: it would be WILDLY helpful if you’d leave a rating & review of the book on Amazon!

If you’d rather listen to this blog than read it, please click play below. Otherwise, keep on reading!

I’m going to start with the most frequent question I’ve received since it’s release:

When will it be available on Audible?

It is now! Here’s a little context for you: hardcover, paperback, electronic and audio books are all governed differently. That means there are a ton of logistics and moving parts when it comes to a book release. Though we thought we timed things just right to have the Audible version live on January 10th, it didn’t workout quite that way and Audible went live Thursday January 17th. That means hardcover, paperback, Kindle and Audible are now live on Amazon!

A variation of this question is related to who recorded the audio for Audible. I did! I read every single word of the 8 hours and 24 minutes. It took 5 days to record from start to finish, much of which was spent waiting around while technical difficulties were sorted through.

Audible does have the exclusive on this book, which means it will not be available on other audiobook platforms.

What’s the book about?

Simply: it’s a strategy book, guide and action plan for creating change in your life.

Less simply: We don’t need more information. Whatever the change is that you want to create, you could probably go on for hours, if not days, about the steps you could take, choices you should make, etc.

When I was 350+ pounds and living paycheck to paycheck while my debts continued to accumulate, I KNEW what to do differently. I had spent years gathering information and getting every expert opinion.

The problem was that I didn’t DO those things, or at least I didn’t do them consistently.

What I needed was a resource that would help me stop giving up, giving in and making excuses.

That’s what Chasing Cupcakes is. It’s the tool book that helps you help yourself so you no longer feel stuck, overwhelmed or ensnared in past patterns.

Will it help me lose weight?

If you use the book as I explain in the chapter called, “How to Use This Book”, it will help you create any change you desire, whether it’s related to your happiness, career, finances, relationship, health or anything else.

What does “Chasing Cupcakes” mean?

Funny story – on book release day, I was trying to stay on top of all the emails and comments on social media. One gentleman commented, “I thought you were keto!” and I was totally confused by that comment. I read it to my mom, who had come down for the day, and she said, “Because there’s a cupcake on the cover.

Ohhhhhh. It was a literal interpretation.

To be clear: I do not literally chase down cupcakes…

Since the book is fundamentally about creating change and not specific to weight loss or money, I had been toying with all sorts of titles about change. They all felt generic and not compelling.

My best friend Andrew, tired of hearing me obsess over the options, finally said, “Don’t overthink it. Just go with your gut.

I joked, “If I actually go with my gut, I’d call it Chasing Cupcakes.”

I had never even thought of that name before that very moment, I was just poking fun at myself and my love of cupcakes.

However, it stuck in my head. I thought about it all night long. Really, “cupcakes” are just metaphors for all the things we pursue that keep us from the life we want. The next day, I re-told that story to my publisher and she LOVED it.

I explain this in more detail and go into the story of the cover design in episode 552 of the Primal Potential podcast. You’ll definitely want to hear that cover design story because I was initially DEAD SET against having food of any kind on the cover.

There are a ton of questions in the book. Should I answer them as I go?

Yes. Absolutely. This is NOT a book you want to race through to the end. While learning can be rushed, changing can’t be. Use it as a tool. The goal is NOT to finish quickly and mark it off your list. Go slowly.

Will it be available in bookstores?

🤷🏻‍♀️

Genuinely, I don’t really know. The first publisher I was working with had that as a top priority, but after switching publishers, it’s really not so much of a thing. A lot of it depends on how the book sells. We shall see.

Will you do a book tour?

Not today. That’s as far as I’ve gotten.

Will it be available on Google Reader or iBooks?

Not at this time. Amazon/Kindle/Audible.

How long did it take you to write it?

I started writing in December 2017 and I finished the manuscript Wednesday, September 26th 2018. So, about 9-10 months. I could have taken 10 years writing it – it will never feel “done” or “perfect” to me, but that’s the beauty of life. Share your work, learn and grow as you go!

How can you help me spread the message of this book?

You guys, I am ON FIRE to see to it that everyone who NEEDS this message gets exposed to it. Too many people feel stuck and overwhelmed when something else is TOTALLY possible for them! But, I can’t do that alone. I absolutely, positively need your help.

First and most obviously, I would love for you to buy the book and read it.

Secondly, it is a MASSIVE help if you would please leave a rating & review on Amazon. I understand that this seems trivial but, to make an impact, I need to have 100 reviews just as quickly as I can, and then grow & build from there. Every single one makes a difference and I would be wildly grateful if you could make that happen.

Lastly – share the message. That can include gifting or recommending the book to someone in your life, donating it to your local library or sharing about it on social media. Every single little thing helps because we will spread this message one single person at a time.

Let’s let some of your feedback speak for itself!

Chasing Cupcakes Now Available!

You guys – this is such a huge day! My first book – Chasing Cupcakes – is now available! This isn’t a book that is going to help you learn. This is a book that will help you CHANGE. I cannot wait for you to read it!

I considered writing a book about hormones. I thought about writing about nutrition or anti-diet fat loss. But, I didn’t. Chasing Cupcakes isn’t about hormones, nutrition or fat loss.

Here’s why: there are a ton of amazing resources on those topics. But more importantly:

We already have enough information.

We know the things would could or should do – whether that is eat less, eat better, spend less, exercise more or anything in between.

We KNOW what to do.

What I needed when I was deep in my struggle with obesity, debt and depression was a tool to help me actually DO the things I wanted to do.

I needed the tools and resources to help me CHANGE. I didn’t need to know more. I needed to do more.

I needed help overcoming my excuses, exceptions, doubts and delays.

So, that’s the book I wrote.

Chasing Cupcakes is a tool book, not a rule book.

If there is a change you want to make in your life – this book will help you make it happen.

It doesn’t matter if you want to get out of debt, lose weight, start a business or anything in between – Chasing Cupcakes will help you create change in your life – big or small.

If you want to hear more about the book, the writing process or the formats available and where you can find it, definitely tune in to episode 552 of the Primal Potential podcast. I’m sharing the story behind the title and answering your questions about the book.

In the meantime, you can buy it on Amazon.com.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of the book!

My Boyfriend Sucks at CrossFit (and it’s perfect)

I’ve been dating a guy for almost 2 years. For the first year, we were kinda long distance, but since we’ve lived in the same town, I’ve really, really wanted him to workout with me. My ex-husband didn’t share my enthusiasm for the gym. In all the years we were together, I don’t think we worked out together once. In college, my boyfriend and I worked out together regularly and I LOVED sharing that connection. We encouraged each other, cheered each other on and it felt so good to be a team, at least in that regard.

If you’d rather listen to this blog than read it, please press play below. Otherwise, keep on reading! Please note. The audio is explicit.

[smart_track_player url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/primaldailymotivation/Exceed.m4a” title=”My Boyfriend Sucks at CrossFit” background=”#00ccbb” social_email=”true” ]

Ever since, I’ve really wanted working out together to be a component of my relationship. There’s something about being “in it together”, witnessing each other work hard, and getting to share a small but consistent part of our days, which otherwise are understandably separate.

Even with that strong desire, I’ve never pushed my boyfriend to join me. In fact, I rarely even brought it up. From my experience of having been pushed and pressured to lose weight, I know how terrible that feels and work hard to make sure that no one in my life feels any pressure related to food, fitness or fat loss. Ever. For any reason. Regardless of how good my intentions are.

Once every few months I’d ask, “Want to come?” as I headed to the gym, but that was the extent of it. The answer was always no…until the last week of November.

One Saturday, he asked what I was doing the next day. “Well, I’m going to open gym in the morning. Want to come?

To my amazement, he said, “Sure.” It wasn’t an enthusiastic “sure”, but I jumped at the first sign of willingness!

I figured open gym would be a great way to ease into it without the pressure of a coach and a bunch of other members. Less structure, fewer eyes on him, something a bit more casual….except for the workout I had us do. It included a combination of deadlifts, box jumps and burpees. Hardly an easy combination, even for a seasoned CrossFit enthusiast.

It was not a soft start, but that’s kinda my style. No one has ever accused me of being subtle. 🤷🏻

He wasn’t happy. At all. Seconds into the first round of burpees I heard him say to himself, (or to me, but I ignored it) “I f*cking hate burpees!

A couple minutes later, definitely to me this time, he angrily said through gasps for air, “This is why I wanted to join a regular gym and get in shape on my own before doing this sh*t!

I didn’t say a word.

The cursing, complaining and displeasure continued. I was giggling on the inside, but I promise I didn’t let it show.

The next day, he went back with me – to the gym, by his own volition. He struggled through the regular class workout, taking a couple rounds off to recover before finishing with us.

The following day, he went with me again, and struggled again. After the workout, he signed up for an unlimited membership.

He gone with me 5-6 days every week since then. It’s been nearly 6 weeks.

He’d be the first to tell you that he’s not good at CrossFit. He’s not. I agree.

He’d be the first to tell you that it’s outside his comfort zone and he doesn’t know what’s doing half the time. It’s a hit to his ego.

He’d also be the first to tell you that he’s so glad he started going and absolutely plans to continue.

Why?

Why is it that people get so enthusiastic about CrossFit (or other similar things that outsiders might call “extreme” or “cult like”)? Biased side note – people who refer to CrossFit as a cult are always people who have never been part of the CrossFit community. I’ve never understood how you can make such strong assertions about something you haven’t experienced, but I digress….

Why do we fall in love with doing hard things once we step past fear & doubt and start doing them?

It’s not about the barbell.
It’s not about becoming an elite athlete.

There are two things I believe make it so addictive:

  1. The community
  2. The experience of exceeding your expectations

It’s not that he fell in love with CrossFit. I haven’t fallen in love with CrossFit.

It’s not about CrossFit at all. You become part of a community and fall in love with the experience of exceeding your own expectations.

I don’t do CrossFit to compete. I’m not trying to become a perfect physical specimen, whatever that is.

Most people aren’t.

In fact, my 66-year-old mother joined a CrossFit box this summer. She loves it. Like my boyfriend, she immediately fell into a consistent routine and really, really enjoys it.

Why?

Because it feels AMAZING to exceed your expectations and do hard things you weren’t sure you could do it.

That’s why I love it, too.

Inspired by CrossFit, that’s the vibe I work so hard to re-create in my Primal Potential Masters Club and, increasingly so, in my 12 Weeks to Transformation.

I’m not trying to convince you to start CrossFit. I’m definitely not trying to convince you to join my 12 Weeks to Transformation. Part of what makes these communities so amazing is that the people who are there want to be there. No one makes them go or twisted their arm.

I am, however, encouraging you to find SOME community that encourages you, daily, to exceed your own expectations! Whether it’s CrossFit, my 12 WT or something local to you, I want you to not only be part of a strong, positive community, but also one that encourages you to exceed your expectations and work hard every.single.day.

What a beautiful pursuit for the new year!

My New Year’s Evolution

I started creating New Year’s Resolutions when I was just 7 or 8 years old. I had amazing, ambitious intentions. However, my resolutions always seemed to function a lot like a match. Before a match is lit, it holds so much promise. Once lit, there’s a beautiful burst of fire. Almost as quickly as it’s lit, it’s extinguished and becomes nothing more than a piece of trash.

If you’d rather listen to this blog than read it, please click play below. Otherwise, just keep on reading.

[smart_track_player url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/primaldailymotivation/Evolution.m4a” title=”Evolution” background=”#00ccbb” social_email=”true” ]

Here are a few of the fundamental problems with the New Year’s Resolutions of my past.

  • There was no sense of urgency. Setting a goal for the year meant that there was always “time”. I’d talk myself out of action in January and February because I still had months and months to make it happen.
  • I rarely moved from strong intention to consistent action. A resolution, to me, was more like a wish. I wished to lose weight, to save money, to get more organized. But, intention doesn’t create change.
  • I forgot about them. After a few weeks of kind of trying or putting things off because there was still plenty of time, I’d get distracted by something else in life until I came upon the list of resolutions 8 months later.
  • I was biting off more than I could chew. My aspirations often exceeded my willingness to change. I wasn’t ready or willing to totally overhaul my diet or my finances, even though I wanted the result it would create. My approach to New Year’s Resolutions was essentially the same as someone who has never run deciding to run a marathon but totally unwilling to lace up and go for a jog.

My New Year’s Resolutions, no matter how great the intentions behind them, were met with delays and distractions, until they were nothing more than a forgotten list of broken promises.

I couldn’t continue pursuing a failing strategy. More accurately, I wouldn’t. I wasn’t willing to. I didn’t want the same lack of results.

I wrote at length in my book (coming January 10th!) about pursuing change and improvements via evolution, not revolution. Not resolution.

I needed small, actionable steps. I needed to focus on the day I was in, the present moment and all it’s potential, instead of an aspirational future goal.

I wanted to commit to the process – to live a certain way – instead of attaching to a particular outcome.

In episode 549 of the podcast, I’ll be sharing my year-end review process but for today, I want to share the evolutions I’m choosing as I go into 2019.

Evolution Versus Revolution Versus Resolution

From my experience, a resolution is an intention. It’s a wish or aspiration. It could even be as strong as a decision, but even decisions are worthless if we don’t act on them and see them through. Resolutions have never worked for me.

A revolution is an overhaul. A dramatic change. It’s extreme. Revolutions have never worked for me. The more extreme and intense the strategy, generally, the less sustainable it has been for me.

Evolution is gradual. Evolution requires action. Something is happening. It’s not dramatic, it’s not intense but it is both powerful and impactful.

As I go into 2019, I’m continuing my own personal and professional evolution.

It’s all about process improvement, not outcome attachment.

It’s not about doing more things or bigger things, it’s about doing better things.

It’s not about being more productive, it’s about being more fulfilled.

I’m not here to tell you that you should take the path of evolution, but I’m happy to share what it looks like for me and the various evolutions I’m creating in my life.

There was a lot of rushing in 2018. A lot of busyness. A lot of to-do lists and tasks. I want to move beyond busy and into fulfilled. Joyful. Happy.

My evolution is about how I want to live my days, not what I want to achieve at the end of them.

Personal Evolution

  • In general: More fun. I’ve gone through most of my life with days that are about productivity and “fun” is something that happens intermittently. Sure, I value productivity. But I also believe I can create a life where fun happens every single day. I’m pursuing that this year.
  • In love: I’m working to evolve my thinking away from the ideas of “the right way” and “the wrong way”. I have ideas in my head, largely shaped from past experiences, about the way things “should” be. The way communication should be. The way intimacy should be. The way commitment should be. I want to operate from a blank slate. How do I want things to be? What can we try? How can we break out of “convention” and explore what works for us? How can I focus on all that is right instead of all I’ve decided is “wrong”? I want to let go of everything that doesn’t bring me joy and peace and seek out more things that do!

Questions I’ll be asking myself:

  • How can I make this more fun?
  • What was the most fun I had today?
  • How can I create something I want in my relationship? How can I be part of the solution?

Professional Evolution

  • I’m evolving from having a “hustle” to having a business. Yes, I am self-employed, but up until this point, Primal Potential has relied almost entirely on my time and effort. I want to put more systems in place and I want to look closely at what I really love doing and what I don’t love doing and make some changes accordingly. I want to invest more time and energy into writing my next books, and that will require some sacrifices. I’m ready to make them.
  • I want to do less and do it better. I want to spend more hours of the day working on my business than working in it. I’ve always worked “on” the business, but that has been secondary to hustling to work “in” it. That’s changing this year. The majority of my work hours will be spent making things better and more efficient. The minority of my hours will be spent on tasks and deliverables.

Questions I’ll be asking myself:

  • Does this contribute to the way I want to spend my days?
  • How can I make this easier?
  • Where is the intersection of maximum impact and maximum freedom?
  • Is there a system for this?

Make sure to tune into episode 549 of the Primal Potential podcast (airs Monday December 31st) to hear all about my 2018 reflections and my 2019 intentions!

Best Workout Clothes – Top 5

Working out isn’t always easy. When you do the work to motivate yourself and show up, the last thing you want is to be distracted by your clothes.

You can’t possibly get in your best workout when you’re tugging at your pants or constantly readjusting your bra.

I’ve gone through workouts where I’m more focused on making sure my boobs don’t fall out of my bra than I am on the workout itself.

Not ideal.

The challenge is: most great workout clothes are expensive! I know it’s all relative, but spending $70 on a sports bra or $85 on a pair of leggings doesn’t get me excited.

I workout daily and often work and run errands in the clothes I’ll wear to the gym. I don’t want to feel like I’m wearing the same bra 4 times a week or that I only have 2 pairs of leggings to choose from (been there, done that).

Fortunately, affordable, cute, supportive workout clothes have become a real passion of mine and Fabletics delivers the trifecta:

  1. Their clothes are generally less than half the price of what’s available through other industry leaders like Reebok, Nike, Lululemon or Athleta. For example, from Fabletics, you can get 2 pairs of leggings for $24. Leggings from those other brands are often between $70 and $120! Their sports bras are in the $20 range and as of when I’m writing this, they have a ton on sale for under $20! And, a ton of their stuff is on HUGE sale right now!
  2. The quality is on point! They have a wide variety of sports bras that are full coverage so you can jump and run without popping out of the top. Their leggings move with you – no sagging!
  3. CUTENESS OVERLOAD. They have a ton of great patterns and colors, or if you’re like me, they have a huge array of basic solid colors. I have no problem wearing Fabletics while running errands or meeting friends for coffee.

Let’s talk about my favorites. I prefer bras with a higher neck line, full length leggings and flattering tank tops. I’m also a sucker for a great sweatshirt or jacket! They certainly have tons of other styles, but my favorites are based on my personal style and items I’ve tried and loved. They’re in no particular order.

Please note: If you’re new to Fabletics, make sure to register through my podcast link here. Doing so will help you save on your first order – you’ll be eligible for that 2 for $24 leggings deal. Before you browse the items below, take a second to register here.

Lexi Midi Sports Bra

This one is presently on sale for less than $20! Grab it up! Even regularly priced, however, it’s a steal!

Marcia Sports Bra

I love the look and the support! I have the matching leggings, too! This one is presently on sale as well!

Lotta Cocoon Hoodie

It has partial zippers on each side, pockets and a hood. This one was an immediate favorite!

My favorite leggings are the powerhold style ones. They don’t move when you’re running or jumping. I’m so over tugging my pants up!

Salar Solid Powerhold

I have these in 7/8 length in multiple colors including the green below.

My favorite of all the colors is the Seaport. It’s not too bright but it’s just bright enough (for me) to be fun! These are so awesome! I also have them in navy, black and iron.

While you’re here, I want to clear up a BIG misconception about Fabletics. While yes, it is a membership site, you are NOT automatically charged each month.

Here’s the way it works:

On the first of every month, you’ll get an email with curated picks based on preferences you establish when you register.

You have 5 days to decide if you want to make a purchase or skip the month. If you skip the month, you aren’t charged.

If you don’t skip the month, you either buy something, or, they’ll charge you $49.95, which shows up as a credit on your account. It’s not a membership fee. You are free to skip and have 5 days to do so, or, it’s just in your account as a credit. They do a great job of explaining their services here.

“Thin” Isn’t Synonymous with “Healthy”

The other day, I shared a post on Instagram that really inspired me.

(If you’d rather listen to this blog than read it, please click the play button. Otherwise, keep reading below.)

[smart_track_player url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/primaldailymotivation/New_perspectives.m4a” title=”Thin Doesn’t Equal Healthy” background=”#00ccbb” social_email=”true” ]

I love this message, because it seems like many people have decided that thin = healthy and not thin = not healthy.

I’m not here to suggest that carrying 100 lbs of excess fat is healthy so let’s not get it twisted, however, you’re grossly oversimplifying things if you assume that thin and healthy are the same thing.

You can be thin and healthy. You can be thin and unhealthy.

You can be physically healthy and mentally not well.

I’m writing this to remind us all that there are many, many factors that go into this idea of “health” or “wellness”.

Are you happy?

Are you energetic?

Are you strong?

How are you sleeping?

How much stress do you have in your life?

Are you healthier than you were last year?

Are you improving?

Are you active?

Do you feel in control of your choices?

Do you have strong relationships in your life?

Let’s use me as an example. My mom has a lower body fat percentage than I do. Does that automatically mean she’s healthier than I am?

Nope.

Most importantly: health isn’t comparative. It’s individual.

I’d love to encourage all of us to not compare health & wellness from one person to the next. Your health doesn’t have anything to do with mine. Your weight isn’t relative to mine.

Let’s compare your present level of health & wellness to where you’ve been, where you’re going, how you feel and how you want to feel.

Are you getting healthier? Happier? More connected? Less stressed?

That is the path, my friends.

It’s not about who is leaner than who or who is stronger or faster.

Weight loss isn’t synonymous with good or with healthy.

It’s time to create new perspectives.

Refusing Fear

Episode 543 of the podcast was one of the most popular ones I’ve done to date. In it, we talked about insecurity, fear of judgement and refusing to restrict your life to the boundaries of your fears.

If you’d rather listen to this blog than read it, please click play. Otherwise, keep on reading below.

[smart_track_player url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/primaldailymotivation/refusing_fear.mp3″ artist=”Refusing Fear” background=”#00ccbb” social_email=”true” ]

I shared that one HUGE thing I’m working on is refusing to submit to fear.

I don’t want “fears” (or even more benign thoughts) about what others think of my body to influence what I wear, for example.

I don’t want fears of what people might think to stop me from getting up to dance at a bar.

I don’t want fears of other people’s opinions to limit what I say or share in my life or in my business. Here’s what I’ve been telling myself, over and over again as I practice this:

The difference between something I’m afraid of and something I’m excited about is the perspective I choose.

The difference between an adventure and an obstacle is my attitude.

I got a super-major chance to practice what I preach this week.

I was recently accepted into an elite (and very expensive) business mastermind. The only thing holding me back from joining was fear. The only thing that kept me from immediately accepting the invitation was fear.

  • Fear of spending such a huge sum of money
  • Fear of going way outside my comfort zone
  • Fear of commitment
  • Fear of not fitting in

Focused on the fears, risks and my discomfort, I told the mastermind host that I needed to think about it and I’d email him the following day.

About 3 minutes after I said that, I got honest with myself and sent him the below email (make sure you’ve allowed images for this email so you can see it.)

The subject line of the email was: I’m in. Here’s part of what I wrote:

When I told him I’d think about it, I was buying myself time to consider all those fears. All those risks and nerves.

BUT: that’s not who I want to be. I don’t want to let my fears influence my actions.

I don’t want to continue to limit my life to the boundaries of my fears and worries.

The difference between something I’m afraid of and something I’m excited about is the perspective I choose.

The difference between an adventure and an obstacle is my attitude.

The difference between you being stressed about weight loss and excited about it is your attitude.

The difference between me being nervous about buying a new property and excited is my attitude.

The difference between me being nervous about my book launch and over-the-moon excited is the story I tell myself about it, my perspective.

The difference between me being embarrassed by my blinking llama onesie (that I wore to a party last night) and thrilled by it is the perspective I choose.

I’m not waiting until 2019 to refuse fear. I’m not waiting another minute to choose a perspective of adventure and opportunity. I’m doing it now.

This is a HUGE part of my work with my clients – helping them refuse to indulge the story of their pasts & their fears and helping them get EXCITED about

This past Thursday, I opened up registration to my Winter 12 Weeks to Transformation to folks who were on the wait list. Today, I want to share with you the webinar I did with them to explain and explore how & why the 12 WT is different from what you’ve tried in the past, how it’s NOT a diet and how we can finally leave the struggle behind.

“Elizabeth, Are You Keto?”

I got a fantastic question via direct message on Instagram the other day.

Sure, I was being a little cheeky but, to the question of whether or not I eat in a way that could be classified as keto, the answer is both yes and no.

One of the primary barriers to success and permanent change that I witness with my clients is that people are far too attached to a single way of eating.

They’ve convinced themselves that it needs to be “this way” or “that way”. They’ve convinced themselves that they need to pick a lane: keto, intermittent fasting, paleo, primal, low carb, high carb, carb cycling…

Here’s the real danger to that all-or-nothing mentality: the moment you make a choice that doesn’t align with the “way” you’ve chosen, you convince yourself that you’ve screwed up and you need to start over.

That is exhausting AND it doesn’t work.

The way you eat isn’t a religion.

If you decide to follow a keto, primal, paleo, vegan, vegetarian, low carb or high carb diet, it’s not a ‘way of life’. It’s a choice.

The problem comes when we treat it like a religion.

We’ve done a good thing if we’ve followed the rules. We’ve done a bad thing if we’ve broken the rules.

We’re “on track” if we’re following the rules. We’re “off track” if we aren’t.

That’s not how I choose to live and it’s not how I choose to work with my clients.

Some days, I eat a lot of non-starchy veggies – enough to prevent my body from being in a state of ketosis. Cool.

Other days, I eat fewer non-starchy veggies, a moderate amount of protein and a keto-expert would call that a ketogenic diet. Love it.

Some days I fast. Great!

Some days I eat at 6am. Perfect.

Other days, I eat a lot of protein – enough to prevent my body from being in a state of ketosis. Awesome!

On days like yesterday, I eat sweet potato fries. Winning!

Other days, I don’t have any starch. Yay!

Some days I don’t eat any meat. Perfect.

Am I a vegetarian? For that day I was.

I eat in a way that makes me feel my best.

I eat in a way that makes my body and my mind feel good.

I work to avoid the things that don’t make me feel my best.

It’s not a religion.

From the outside, some days are keto. Some days are paleo. Some days aren’t. Some days are gluten free. Some days aren’t.

It’s not about rules, it’s about paying attention to what makes you feel amazing and learning from your choices.

I’m all of it – keto, vegetarian, vegan, paleo, primal, cupcakes, intermittent fasting.

And sometimes I’m none of it, too.

What makes you feel your best? Do that.
